چکیده

Valman, H. B., and Roberts, P. D. (1974). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 49, 932. Vitamin B12 absorption after resection ofileum in childhood. Impaired absorption ofvitamin B12 has been shown by a whole body counter technique in 7 of 10 infants and children who had resection of over 45 cm of ileum. Absorption was normal in 2 patients who had 15 cm or more terminal ileum remaining. If absorption

Vitamin B12 absorption after necrotizing enterocolitis.

Resection of the terminal ileum for necrotizing enterocolitis is not uncommon in neonates requiring intensive care in the first weeks of life. They may therefore be at risk of vitamin B12 malabsorption, and later of vitamin B12 deficiency. A method of measuring B12 absorption is described and the results are given. This assessment should be part of the follow up for all these children.

Effects of Vitamin B12 in Neonates and Young Infants

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis. Animal protein is the major dietary source of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to megaloblastic anemia, degeneration of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and abnormalities of epithelial tissues. Two factors are necessary for the cure of megaloblastic anemia: one in food (extrinsic factor) and one i...

Deficiency of vitamin B12 after extensive resection of the distal small intestine in an infant.

Man may survive resection of surprisingly large amounts of the small intestine. As little as 7 in. of jejunum and ileum may be sufficient to support life, atleast for a time (Jackson, Linder and Berman, 1951), and a large number of patients have survived less extensive resections and have remained well (Flint, 1912; Haymond, 1935; West, Montague and Judy, 1938; Althausen, Uyeyama and Simpson, 1...

Distinct intestinal adaptation for vitamin B12 and bile acid absorption revealed in a new mouse model of massive ileocecal resection

Ileocecal resection (ICR), one of several types of intestinal resection that results in short bowel syndrome (SBS), causes severe clinical disease in humans. We here describe a mouse model of massive ICR in which 75% of the distal small intestine is removed. We demonstrate that mice underwent 75% ICR show severe clinical signs and high mortality, which may recapitulate severe forms of human SBS...

U NTIL RECENT YEARS it was believed that the absorption of vitamin B12 fl man tOok place in the upper and middle portions of the small intestine.4’7’8 However, studies in animals, especially dogs, have revealed that considerable absorption takes place in the ileum, whereas it is negligible in the proximal small intestine2’10 unless very large doses are given. ’15 Clinical observations in patien...
